Hello Friends,
Guess what! We have a new tablet driver from Wacom. Sorry, I am a few days late; the new driver was available March 18. I did notice something strange. Usually Wacom leaves previous drivers on the site, but for some reason, the last driver from Feb 13 has been removed. You can find the new driver HERE.
Here is what Wacom says about the new update:
Driver supports Intuos5 (PTH), Intuos4 (PTK) and Intuos3 (PTZ) pen tablets and the Cintiq 24HD touch, Cintiq 24HD, Cintiq22HD, Cintiq 21UX, Cintiq 13HD, Cintiq 12WX, Cintiq 20WSX, DTH-2242, DTU-2231, DTU-1931, DTU-1631 and DTU-1031 pen displays.
Save the file to your computer and then double-click on it to launch the installer.
Release Notes:
- Improved touch performance
- Fixed several issues releated to custom aplication settings
- Redesign of calibration reminder dialog
- Fixed a handedness issue with ExpressKeys
- Improved pan/scroll functionality in Autodesk SketchBook Pro 6
- Other enhancements and bug fixes
- Known limitations for Cintiq 13HD: Cintiq 13HD uses a new Wacom Display Settings utility to manage the display’s colors etc.. When Cintiq is one of multiple displays, the system display configuration must be set to “Extend these displays” while using the utility .

A NOTE FROM ME:
I have been meaning to write a quick note about what’s going on with me. Well, I’ve waited so long to say anything, you may already know I have taken a sabbatical from teaching for a few months. I will be back at DAA with new classes in July. I’m still around in the forums and in other DAA classes. I had hoped I would have more time for my blog, but that hasn’t been the case…I seem to have less time.
Deciding what material to present on the blog is tough for me right now. I guess it is like writer’s block. If anyone, has a special topic that they would like to see on the blog, do let me know. It will probably goad me into action. 🙂
OK…go get your Wacom Driver and look for classes from me around July.

Thank you for posting the information for the new driver..I have had small issues off and on with the Wacom, but this is probably operator error as I am a new user. I am very happy with the results I have accomplished with Corel Painter 12 so far and have down loaded and have used some of your wonderful brushes.
How do you start? I have a hard time with layers, on how come I can not use a brush on a new layer ? What is the average amount of layers do you use? Do you use masks?
My goodness Deb…got a couple of hours. 🙂 I start painting in a number of ways, sometimes from scratch, or from a reference photo, or by cloning, and sometimes I just splash paint on a layer and see what happens.
There are a number of types of brushes that will not paint on a layer unless there is pigment on the layer. The method, which you can find on the general brush control panel will be liquid brush or Drip for these brushes.
I really don’t know an average number of layers I use. It can be 20 or more, but I can also work on only one. It depends on the image and what I am trying to accomplish.
Yes, I use layer masks a lot. They are very useful.

Yes Skip, your technical teaching videos are great, and even your videos for PLite were instructive for we P12 folks. Very much appreciated.
But most fun of all are your informal doodling sessions, interrupted by your cat or dog or whatever, and your sense of humour. Brings a smile on even a cloudy day.

There are brushes in the works. Thanks for asking about Doreen. I haven’t seen her for quite some time. I don’t think she was a young deer…and there is doe hunting season. I can’t say what happened to her. But, if she is going to show up, it will be in the next three months. I’ll let you know.

Hi Skip. Of course I want you to enjoy your sabbatical. However, you should know that new Painter users (like me) hang on your every word! And we would love to just have you ramble on, or pontificate, or whatever you feel like doing, as long as you eventually discuss something Painter.
I am planning on taking the next course you offer…I am so enjoying Karen’s Abstract class right now.
Don’t do that Bonnie. Hanging on words can be dangerous. I’m just being silly; I’ll be posting soon.

I did have a question. I have downloaded your Cool Spring brushes. I have the latest build of Painter 12. I am not sure if I need to do something different with this collection of brushes, since they were made prior to this release of Painter. Can you offer some advice?
Yes Bonnie. If you go to the Cool Spring Download page you will see three different files that can be downloaded. Choose either the Cool Spring.brushlibrary, which will load a library in Painter that contains only the Cool Spring Brushes…or choose the Cool Spring.brushcategory and it will load a Cool Spring Category into the currently active Library. The download that is Cool Spring.Zip is for earlier versions of Painter.

Thanks for the update on Wacom. You mentioned that you would like suggestions for information to post on your blog…… I am relatively new to Painter but one thing I have noticed that I really like is when a piece has very distinctively painted strokes, lots of thick paint, drips or texture. So far I have been unsuccessful in finding the brushes or the tweaks that make these attributes possible. Any suggestions on which brushes to try working with???

I just finished viewing the video above with the roses. Took lots of notes! I have downloaded some of the brushes and some “stick” to the brush panel and some do not. When I added some, Painter 12 opened with just that brush set showing and no others. When I closed it and reopened P12, same thing. When I closed and opened again with shift key down, all of the brushes that stuck stayed, but 2 of the newer sets listed on the site did not. One was soft Water and the other Splash…. I have P12.2 on my PC. Help! Must admit, I am not able to read well.

When you load one of my brush sets using a file with the extension .brushlibrary, it places the brushes into its own library. You can only see one library at a time. So when you loaded the library, the program changes to that particular library. To see your other brush libraries go to your Brush Selector and open the brush drawer by clicking on the triangle below the icon on the brush selector. When the drawer opens, then click on the option button in the upper right corner. In the list that opens, select Brush Library. In that list select Painter Brushes and you will be back to the default library.

I tried that but your thick paints and buttery oils will not get into the brush selector panels. Also, when I clicked on Brush Library, Painter brushes and Painter 11 categories show up, and not all the same brushes are in each.

UPDATE: Many thanks go to Skip who did fine job of explaining how to add brushes to P12. It worked for me with one slight change: I only needed to download the Brush Category to desktop before importing it to P12. Efforts to add both library and category failed; somehow I figured out to import category only. I stress that said route may be because of my own PC’s quaintness. All new categories/brushes worked flawlessly. Now what to create with them!? I am a photographer, not a medium type artist.
Further, the Wacom update worked on my Intuis 440 tablet which is older. Initial efforts were troublesome but immediate support from the website solved the problem stemming from MY not knowing how to do it, not Skip’s link.
In summary, support from Skip is first rate and immediate and easy to follow from a challenged reader such as I. I will support my opinion of what he does via donation as soon as I am able.

I am delighted that you have been able to install the brushes. Actually you do not need to install both the library and category file. You just want to install one or the other. I provide both so you have a choice. If you did want to establish a new library with the category in it, using the brushlibrary file is the way to go. It is a little complex to create a library yourself and then load the category file into it. Having both types of files available makes it easy for you.
