Hello Friends,
Sometime last month I believe; I am not exactly sure. Microsoft had an update of its NET Framework software. This came automatically with a Windows update. If you are like me, you have your system set to automatically download and install Windows Updates. Normally, that isn’t a problem. However, this time, there was some sort of conflict with Corel Painter 2015, Corel Painter X3, Wacom tablets, and Microsoft’s NET Framework. If you installed the update and you tried to open Painter, it simply would not open or you got an error messages telling you that you needed to reinstall Painter, which wouldn’t work either.
The guys at Corel developed a solution and published it in the Corel Painter Knowledge Base in an article called Painter Users with .Net 4.5.2 Installed. Since I was at my sister’s when all this happened, I didn’t pay any attention. By the time I realized something was amiss, it had been weeks, so I thought all of you would know what to do by now. However, I have had several folks ask me about it in the last two days. So, I thought I better post this information even though it is late.

Skip, What can you do to get Corel to update/upgrade Painter so that the application has a frame like Photoshop does? Scott

Why don’t you make a post over at Painter Factory and suggest it. The development team does look at all those suggestions. LOL…I had to open up PS to see what sort of frame you are talking about. I don’t think I want a frame like PS. But, Painter’s workspace is very customizable…could you try to customize in a way that it is close to PS?

I uninstalled and reinstalled but did not help. Once I disconnected my wacom painter opened. I probably should uninstall Microsoft Framework 4.2.5. Good news that you have Painter working again. When I tried unplugging my wacom tablet, it didn’t help. I had to actually shut my computer down, unplug, reboot, open Painter, and then plug in the Wacom. Some folks like you just need to unplug, but I had to do a complete shutdown.

Another of many times your system alerts have saved me tons of time and hassle, which is slightly less than your painting tip savings.
If anyone is applying the workaround on Win 8.1 64b, KB2934520 is the update key to uninstall Microsoft Framework 4.2.5.
Because of MS consistent record of semi-tested install foibles, just the thought of MS and “Automatic Update” in the same sentence without “DON’T!” in front of it, makes my soymilk tofu. I’m sure my complete backup before installs policy is a practically placebo practicality, but it does give me a few days to stumble upon anomalies and easily reset, when the alternative would entail months of trying to rebuild a densely entrenched system, a semi-oxymoron at the least.
Think of how many Apps on an artistically inclined system use the same Framework Libraries to enable a Tablet, all should have the same problem.

Hi Raz. There is another solution which I haven’t mentioned. Microsoft has a preview of NET Framework 4.6, which can be downloaded and installed. I know several folks who have done it and find it works great with Painter and other programs. You can find the link here: Microsoft NET Framework 4.6 Preview

I installed 4.6 Preview and it’s held up to light testing. If this continues, I shouldn’t have to worry until the MS B(reak) Team catches up!

I can’t thank you enough for this information. My computer crashed last week & we had to rebuild it from the ground up. I spent all day one day trying to get Painter re installed and open, to no avail. The next day I read your blog email and the answer was right there. Thank you, thank you, thank you. You are the best. Now to get everything else back up an running.

hi skip you likely have no clue who i am but i get your posts emailed to me and i follwed the steps as decribed to get rid of the problems from .net framework 4.5.2- i have remove dthe update and rolled back to 4.5.1 but even after all that i am not able to open painter 2015! i can open painterX3 but not 2015- any further suggestions? i love to go to your site and see the new art you create! you do amazing watercolors that i wish i could claim as my work but watercolors both digital and traditional are over my head at this point. thanks for the lovely brushes you create- i have made 1 lonely brush and hope not to do another in the near future! and why should i with so many amazing ones available? hope to hear from you, lucille eidse

Hi Lucille, There is another solution. You can install Microsoft’s NET Framework 4.6. I know a number of folks who have installed it with great success. You can find the information about it here: Microsoft NET Framework 4.6

You are correct, it is, but the good news is there is a workaround.
I know this is a bit late, but I slithered by with just the trial run for 3 months with my wacom companion. I finally caved and got painter 2015-on my laptop windows 8.1 and I can’t even get the application to open. I’ve tried installing, reinstalling, opening with my tablet connected and unconnected, running as administrator, running normally, created a new account and reinstalled into new account, restarting my laptop, etc etc etc. I tried finding either I’m on network frame 4.5.2 and I can’t find it worth the life of me. Do you have any idea what could have gone so wrong from opening when I used a trial run to absolutely not opening at all when I purchased the software? I’m at a complete loss!

After installing Painter it is best to open it the first time with a Shift Start. You hold down the shift key and then start Painter while continuing to hold down the shift key. A Window will open that asks if you want to set Painter to its factory defaults. Once it opens, you can let go of the shift key. Then you will select the second option to reset to factory defaults and click on reset all workspaces. Now wait…it can take a few minutes…go get a cup of coffee if you are antsy. The wait depends on your computer, but if it takes 30 minutes, then it will probably not happen and we need to try something else. But first, try the shift start and see if it works. You do not have to start as an administrator or any of that…just hold down the shift key and start painter. I hope this works, but if not, there are a few other options we can try to get you up and running. Skip

I probably should have asked if you downloaded and installed the Update and Patch for Painter 2015. Do download and install before you do the shift start. You can find them at the patches and updates area of Painter. Let me know if it works for you.
