Corel Painter 2017 Released Aug 9, 2016! Woo-hoo! What’s New in Corel Painter 2017

Hello Everyone,

Corel released Corel Painter 2017, today.  It is fantastic; I really love it.  I am sure you will too.  But don’t take my word for it.  Download your free 30 trial today.

And of course, I have a class called Woo-hoo! What’s New in Painter 2017.  I designed the class to bring you up-to-date on all the new features of Painter 2017 plus lots more.  The following video is the first video of the class and gives a broad over-view of what’s new in this version.

If you have taken one of my classes previously, you know that I cover the material in great detail.  The class officially opens on Saturday, Aug 13th, but I made some of the Week 1 videos available so early registrants can start playing right away.

I made the following image in Corel Painter 2017 using the new interactive gradient tool.  I started with one of my inky landscapes and then added color via gradients.  I have demonstrated this technique in Painter 2016, but Painter 2017 brings way more power to the technique.  The gradient tool might be…I keep changing my mind…my favorite new feature.

I hope to see you in the class.  I promise it will be a lot of fun.

Enjoy,

  1. It’s okay to have more than one ☝ favorite! Thanks for the notice and the information on your class.

  2. Tks for the timely update Skip. If history repeats Corel will probably notify existing users in a week or so.

I’ll pass on this “upgrade” just like the 2016.

  3. Hi Skip, I have upgraded to 2017..downloading now.

Questions: I have painter 12,15, 16 and now 17 on my laptop…I plan on installing 17 on my reg computer which I do not use anymore just for safe keeping.
Are all these other older one going to bog down my laptop?

I seem to remember that I had to download all the saved brushes from you and other people individually from 15 to 2016..is there an easier way to do this for 2017?

Does this class you are doing cost anything? Seems like I have to log in order to get any information.

    • Hi Deb,
The other programs will only affect your computer if you do not have much space left on your hard drive. But, I’m not sure why you would want to keep the older versions. I do because folks ask questions about the older versions and I need to open them and review to answer the questions. I currently have 12 – 17 on my computer, but I am using only 1/5th of the available space.
For loading brushes, it depends on how you have them saved on your computer. If you have kept them in separate libraries, you can export the libraries from 2016 and import into 2017. If you have created your own workspace that has all of the brushes, you can export the workspace and import that into Painter 2017, but you will lose some customization. It really does depend on how you keep your custom stuff.
Yes, the class costs money. The cost is $55.00 US. And, it is correct that you have to log in to get information…but that doesn’t cost anything. You can log in and explore all that DAA offers.
      Hope this helps,

  5. Hi Skip Just uploaded Painter 2017. Unable to load your brushes from 2016 or earlier nor other third party brushes I was using. Painter says not able to import,Tried to load your Watercolor brushes from your site but no go. Would appreciate any help.

    • Hi John,
You shouldn’t have any trouble importing brushes from previous versions. Can you please tell me what you did to import them? Also, please let me know if you are on a PC or a Mac and what operating system you are running. I am guessing there is something wrong with your methodology, but I need to know what that is or what you did to import the variants. I’m sure we can sort it out and get the brushes loaded.

    • Glad it is working for you. However, closing Painter 2017 should not have made a difference. It is a mystery still. But…it doesn’t matter as long as you have them loaded.

  6. don’t know if you received my last comments, so I’m repeating them. How long is your class? When downloading, is the shift key held down when opening Painter 2017 as with other downloads. Know this is redundant, but it’s safer to be sure!
I’m in the middle of Karen’s Painter Club 2016 now. It could be a hassle to do both!
    Thanks for your help.

    • Yes, Alice, I got your comment and responded. You made the comment on the post about special upgrade pricing. You are making this comment on the post about Painter release. Maybe that is why you didn’t see my answer. When you first open any new version of Painter, you do want to open with a shift start and set all workspaces to the factory default.
This is what I said in answer to your first comment:
I am not sure exactly how long the class will be. When doing a class for a product that was just released, I develop the class on the go…so to speak. I think it will last from 3 to 4 weeks, but we will not close the class and it will remain as open enrollment for quite some time. The official start date of the class is Saturday, Aug 13th. If you have custom stuff in Painter 2016 that you want to use in Painter 2017, then, yes, you need to transfer it from one version to the next one. This can be done a number of ways, the simplest way would be to export your workspace from 2016 and import it into 2017. Once done, you would want to do a shift start retaining some customization. I hope you can take the class.
I understand if you can’t take both Karen’s and my class. They will be very different, but I know Karen will be covering stuff in Painter 2017, too.

  7. “Woo-Hoo!” is right!!! How awesome is all this?!!! Will be grand to take a class with you again – your classes are always absolute FUN! The timing is perfect for me…I just treated myself to the Cintiq 13 HD Touch and have been reviewing your videos for the cintiq (more awesomeness!). I’m beyond ready!!! See you in class (yep, already registered and have purchased/installed 2017)
    Thank you, thank you!!!
    Marie

    • Hey Marie,
I bet you are going to love your Cintiq. While I am away from home I am using my Intuos 5 touch…I like it, but it just isn’t the same as a Cintiq. See you in class.
      Enjoy,

  8. I’m looking forward to this class, Skip. I’m glad you’ve got these things figured out. I poked around today but couldn’t figure them out without you or reading about them. Tomorrow I’ll get at the videos. All very exciting.

  9. I just bought 2017 and I’m confused on how to install brush categories/libraries like the ones on this blog. I’ve got a couple of other downloads from non-Corel people on there and they’ve all ended in .brushcategory, .brushvariant and .brushlibrary

Since I started with 2015 I’m unfamiliar with any earlier versions of painter.

    • Hi Cassie,
The brush categories or brush libraries that I have available for download are in .brushcategory or .brushlibrary format. All you do is open Painter, go to Brushes Menu and select import, library, category, or brush. Then go to where you have saved the file and click it. The category will load in the currently active library. The library will load as a new library. I am at a loss to understand what you are asking about brush categories/libraries that are on this blog. Can you give me a link or something that shows me the brush library or category you are talking about. Thanks, Skip

  10. Hi Skip,
I want to take your new class but the plate is packed currently. Would it still be possible to take it in December? Thanks so much!

    Betty

    • Hi Betty,
Sorry for the late reply…the class is keeping me pretty busy. Yes, the class will be an open enrollment class for quite sometime. You can join anytime.
Hope to see you in class,
      Skip
