    It’s my niece’s birthday tomorrow as well, so I may remember yours next year! Is this the paragraph you were working on today? it’s beautiful, love the script style and execution. I never knew you were a poet, as well as a sculptor and almost chemist/biologist. I’ve been working on a border for my calligraphy piece and totally forgot about Karen’s border lesson using the kaleidoscope tool, is that what you used for your lovely scroll at the bottom. Must go dig that lesson out.

    Photography is a great hobby but oh so expensive. I felt 36 MP was a bit much for me (price had nothing to do with it, lol) and I put the Nikon D7100 on my birthday wishlist. Steven came through on Oct 29 so I have a few new things to learn about it. Digital cameras have changed a lot since I got my D80. Since I’ve gotten into painting these last couple of years I look at the world a little differently and find this has influenced my photography. I consider actually having people in them now.

    A couple of cool techniques to learn up on are HDR (High Dynamic Range) and Panoramas. If you’re interested here are some of mine at Flickr

    • Hi Debbie, I have a D80. I love that camera. It takes the best pictures. I got a couple of fairly nice lenses for it, too. And they work well on the D810, too. Now true confession. I also got the D700…that was the camera that I was going to really learn photography with. I didn’t…so instead of buckling down and learning that camera…I have bought the D810. Surprise…I have learned more about the D810 than I ever knew about the D700, but the other day, I took a look at the D700 and realize that a lot I am learning about the D810 applies to the D700. Now, I am thinking I can take both cameras with me…shoot all three with me…or I need to sell the two older ones so I can buy more stuff for the D810. More later. Lyn just posted, too. So nice to have friends down under. 🙂
      For got to say, I have done some HDR and panoramas, too…kind of pitiful though.

  2. okay Skip.. first….a very happy birthday to you. But also a question. Which of your brushes did you use? I do calligraphy the traditional way and find the calligraphy brushes which come with Painter …well…not very useful for actual lettering (other good uses though)
    70 is young. Some of us passed that a while ago……:)

    • Hi Jean,
      I created some new calligraphy brushes for Holiday Open Studio. I’ll post them on the blog later. In the meantime, go to your brush libraries and check out Painter 11 brush library…it will be in all versions after Painter 11. Then check out the calligraphy brushes there. There is a whole category. I still tweaked what I found, but there are several there that are useful. I found doing calligraphy in Painter easy…but then it has been a very long time since I did any in the traditional way. I love the undo button when doing calligraphy.
