Wacom Posted New Tablet Drivers for the Mac

Hello Everyone,

I posted about the updated drivers for a PC 3 days ago.  Today, Wacom released new tablet drivers for the Mac.  You can find them here.  Wacom Tablet Drivers for the Mac

I did update my Windows Drivers on March 3rd, and I have had moderate success.  I did have some problems and had to restart the tablet services several times.  But, all has been good the last couple of days.  If I continue to have problems, I’ll let you know.

Enjoy,

  1. Skip, thank you as always, for your update information re Wacom drivers.
A few other Mac Wacom owners might be similar to my situation.
I own a Wacom Intuos 3 tablet (6″x11″ wide format), and am running Mac OS X 10.7.5 Lion. My current / most recent Wacom Intuos driver update is version 6.3.7-3; updated last year, as I recall.

In looking at the current driver updates on the Wacom site, I see that — for Intuos — the latest Mac driver is version 6.3.11-3a.
HOWEVER, be forewarned if you are running an OS lower than 10.8 Mountain Lion. The Wacom info indicates that this current version if for Mac OS X 10.8 to 10.10.

  2. ADDENDUM2 (sorry to go on like this, but) . . .
I just got off the phone with Wacom Support. The tech rep told me that if my current driver 6.3.7-3 is working OK, he would not recommend that I update the driver to 6.3.8-2 (which is for 10.7, 10.8 and 10.9).

At the time I updated my driver to 6.3.7-3, I did so by downloading it from the “Legacy Drivers” page on the Wacom site. It is odd, then, that that particular version is not now listed among the legacy drivers. For OS X 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8, there is a version 6.3.6-4. The next higher version listed is 6.3.8-2. But, 6.3.7-3 is absent. The tech rep could not account for its absence.

    • Hey David,
Thanks for the comments. I’m glad you kept going because it is helpful. I used to remind folks of the legacy drivers but haven’t lately. I keep my drivers believe it or not. I have them in my download folder for Wacom Drivers. Inside of the main folder I have the date the driver was released and the tablet I was using at the time. I still have my Intuos 3, 4, 5 touch and now my 24″ HD Touch Cintiq. I can’t carry the Cintiq around, but I can the 4 and 5. I really never use the 3 anymore. Anyway, the point…I noticed long ago that some drivers went missing. I suspect that they were faulty and replaced quickly. There have been a few times that we will get a new driver and then another new one within 10 days or so…I figure those were faulty and whatever was wrong was missed in the testing phase. I do try to keep up with the latest tablets and drivers within reason. I have had the Cintiq less than a year, so I can’t justify getting the new 27″, but I sure would love to…LOL. It is also time for me to start looking for a new computer…gawd…keeping up can be expensive. I agree if it is working…no need to update, but then, what if the update improves performance. You will not know unless you update. So if you keep your drivers, you can update with the knowledge you can fall back to the previous driver. But, don’t depend that they will always be on the Wacom site. As expected and most hardware and software companies do this…at some point, Wacom will stop supporting older models. Anyway…thanks for all the notes. They are very helpful.

  3. Thanks Garrison…just checked a few days ago but must have been premature will download now, thanks again.

    • Hey Princes,
The Mac drivers do not always come out at the same times as the PC drivers. Don’t know why. Also, our friends in Europe do not usually get the drivers until a couple of weeks later than us…again, not sure why. This time they got them at the same time. Hope all is well, my friend. Hugs, Skip

    • Welcome Daryl…I don’t know why the desktop center didn’t announce the drivers this time. Although I heard one Mac user say that they were notified through their wacom desktop center.

  4. Skip, you’re always so generous with your advice and help, and it’s very much appreciated! I have a Wacom Intuos 4 and I just installed the Mac driver, but now my Painter 2015 crashes upon startup. Do you think that would have anything to do with the Wacom driver update installation? I stupidly did not uninstall the old Wacom stuff before installing the update, so I just now did the Uninstall and then the Install from the Wacom dmg… but Painter still crashes every time. I have an iMac using OSX 10.8.5. Do you have any ideas or thoughts that might help me?
    Thanks so much,
    Kathy

    • Hi Kathy,
I am not sure I can help, but I wonder what driver you installed. You have an Intuos 4, which would not be listed on the Wacom Driver page. If you go to that page you will see drivers for Cintiqs, Intuos Pro, and Intuos, but the Intuos is the new name for a Bamboo. So none of those drivers would be for you. You would want to look on the right side of that page and look for Legacy Drivers. Under Legacy Drivers there is a link that says visit our Legacy Drivers. Click that. You will go to a new page with two drop down menus. Click the first one and scroll down the list until you see Intuos 4 PTK…or Intuos 4 Wireless PTK. Select the one you own. Then go to the next drop down menu and select your operating system…Mac OS X. That will bring up a list of drivers for your Intuos 4. The most recent one is dated Jan 7, 2015 and is for OX 10.8, 10.9 and 10.10. Try installing that version and see if it fixes the problem. I am guessing that everything will be fine after you do that. Good luck, Skip

      • Skip, thank you so much for taking the time to help me. Somehow I didn’t know that Intuos is the new name for Bamboo. Duh. How confusing! So, I uninstalled the incorrect driver and installed the legacy driver you pointed me to. I know that will be what I need in order to use my Wacom (since I had installed the wrong driver)… but unfortunately, Painter continued to crash upon startup.

So, I searched Google further and I finally found an answer that corrected my problem!!! Here’s the exact 2014 posts from the PAINTER FACTORY forum:
        _______________

Suggestion from Ipecats: “have you tried performing factory reset (shift+click launching painter) ”

Suggestion from Elaina Moore-Kelly: “hold down the shift key and attempt to launch Painter. A dialog should appear. Choose ‘All Workspaces’ release the Shift key.
        _______________

After I HELD DOWN THE SHIFT KEY while starting Painter and selected “ALL WORKSPACES,” the program opened fine without crashing. YAY!!!

I had totally forgotten that the last thing I had done in Painter before I installed the [wrong] new driver was that I was trying different Work Spaces!

I have no doubt that you already know about the factory reset, but you were responding to the fact that my problem started happening immediately after I had installed the wrong driver. I sure do appreciate your helpfulness, Skip… thanks again!!

        • Hi Kathy,
Yes, I do know about the shift restart to set Painter back to the factory defaults. I do not suggest it as a first fix, but prefer to look for other solutions and use it as a last resort.

But, if you were trying different workspaces, more than likely, a shift start would have been your only solution. Something I do on a regular basis is export my current workspace. I do that at least once a week. If I decided to try some other workspaces, then I would export the current one before bringing in a new one. Workspaces from previous versions frequently will cause problems…especially in 2015 on a Mac. That is because so much changed between versions…2015 is now 64 bit compatible and older Mac workspaces are not. Anyway, if you export your workspace and then import a new workspace and trouble follows. It is easy to do a shift restart. However, after doing that you have set your workspace back to the factory default. So, you have to go to the trouble of reimporting brushes and other custom stuff. However, if you exported your good workspace, all you need to do is import it back into the newly set Painter. And, voila, you have all your custom stuff back. If you keep a good exported workspace all the time, then you can reset Painter with abandon. 🙂 Just remember, that the exported workspace will not update…every time you make a major change to your workspace…like load a new brush category…then export the workspace again…so your copy is the most up-to-date copy.

          Enjoy,

          • Skip, I’ve owned many versions of Painter, always with high hopes of mastering it… but life kept interrupting and I just couldn’t find the time for the focus I needed. I’ve missed so much and I got left behind in the dust. But this year I’m committed to using Painter to create some fine art and also for illustrating children’s picture books. This advice that you just gave me will be invaluable as I undertake my projects. Cross your fingers for me!! So, thanks again, dear Skip. You rock!

    • Hi Terry,

I have been asked to do this before, but have never found a way to do it. I cannot add, edit, or delete the following list. If you un-subscribe and then resubscribe, it will fix your email. Sorry, but that is the only way I know that you can change your email.

      Enjoy,
