I am having a lot of fun with Painter 2018 these days. I decided to combine watercolor and thick paint; just wanted to see what it would look like. The results pleased me; of course I’m never completely happy, but I don’t hate them. For imagery, I chose to attempt abstract landscapes. I particularly like sumi-e work. The initial bone structure of the painting nods to sumi-e. It doesn’t stay there; the work becomes way too busy to even see a sumi-e influence. I would like to simplify the images and I think I can as I paint more. In the beginning I am unsure of what brushes to use…and I try various ones…each variant adds a little more business to the final image.
This first image gives a good balance between watercolor and thick paint. I really like the watercolor and played down the thick paint.

I couldn’t sleep last night. When that happens, I usually get up and start my day. I did the following two paintings this morning…starting at 4 AM. I don’t like to fuss over a painting for hours…I prefer to jump in, paint, and finish in an hour or less. I certainly do not want to paint over three hours. I lose interest, or I get obsessed with minute details. Both of these images played a bit more with thick paint. I really do like Corel’s new thick paint brushes. I think they are more natural than any other type of variants in Painter.

By the time I started the second painting, sleep deprivation raised its head. I figured bright reds would wake me up. I rarely work with bright reds; I enjoyed the activity very much.

In the title, I mentioned that Painter 2018, Is It Real Paint, is still open. You will remember in my last post I said I was going to close the class on December 31st. Well, I didn’t. And folks have continued to join the class. So, I decided to leave the class as an Open Enrollment Class at least for the rest of 2018. Open enrollment, means you can register at anytime, all the materials are available for download once you register, and you can work at your leisure. There are no deadlines…just set your own pace and post your paintings for critique if and when you want.

Hi Skip,
The format of an open enrollment class is good for me. Hopefully this class is just about thick paint and how to use it? I am not interested in a class on water color and thick pain at this time though your examples are very intriguing. What is the cost of the class? I no longer have the original announcement of the class. I have a potential order for a painting from someone who wants my original painting redone with the thick paint look.

The focus of the class is the new features of Painter 2018…so anything that has been added with this version of painter is covered. That includes Thick Paint and there are quite a few videos about Thick Paint variants and how to use and make them. If you click on the link provided for registration, it will take you to a page that gives you a pretty good description of the class. There are over 100 videos covering a lot of stuff. But, if you want to focus on Thick Paint, simply skip to Lesson 4, which is all about Thick Paint. There are at least 50 videos about thick paint. Hope to see you in class. Enjoy, Skip
Hi, Skip. I am glad you are leaving the 2018 class open. I signed up a while back, but won’t have free time for a while. The red in your painting is a beautiful red. Red is one of my favorite colors. It looks great with the blue accents.

Thanks Cheryl, I thought the red close to a red orange that the blue would look good. I like the combination, too. I might try working with red more often.
The second and third paintings are GORGEOUS! I like the first one, but the second and third paintings are just fabulous. You are so talented and I love these.
Skip have you thought about doing a class with using watercolor and thick paint? If you do, please let me know.

Is artwork created in Corel Painter categorized as “digital art” since you are not using traditional tools like real paint and brushes?
I paint my photos using Corel Painter. Then I print it out on canvas and use graphite and acrylic. I’ve been selecting “Mixed Media” category (pigment, acrylic and pencil).
