More Fun with Watercolor in Corel Painter 2023

I have made several paper textures that resemble rice paper. I need to test them out. Following are some text images using various rice papers.

Mixed Media, Watercolor and Liquid Ink in Painter 2023

Very quickly done image in Corel Painter 2023. I like working in several media in Corel. Working digitally makes it easy. This image is a combination of watercolor and liquid ink. At the end, I used a cool feature called Interactive Gradient.

So much fun working in Corel Painter.

More Fun with Watercolor in Painter 2023

No tutorials this time; I am just sharing some recent work.

I am a bit out of practice, but I do love the sumi-e style. Watercolor in Painter 2023 using some of my custom brushes.

I call this style landscape abstracts. I want the simplest brush work possible but expressing a lot of content. I want the viewer to have participation in discovering their own landscape.

This last one I was trying to get a good emulation of traditional watercolor and a more traditional approach to painting in Painter 2023. I was pleased with the effort.

Fun With Enso in Corel Painter 2023

I don’t pretend to understand the philosophy behind Enso. Wikipedia states that in Zen, Enso is a circle that is hand drawn in one or two uninhibited brush strokes to express a moment when the mind is free to let the body create. For me it is similar to creating Sumi-e or using ink and brush to make the circle.

I cannot tell you why I like these images or why I enjoy doing them. I just do. I find the process relaxing. Normally I go too far and embellish the images as you will see in the first of the video. But I also do the simple one stroke forms but rarely save them.

I thought you might like to try them yourself. Just have fun. The practice also strengthens my drawing skills. Enjoy…

Corel Painter 2023 Released in June

It’s been a year since I last posted. Since April 2021, my life was difficult, but I think I see light at the end of the tunnel. I have been on sabbatical from Corel Painter, classes, and everything else. I am still on sabbatical, but I am gradually returning to life as normal.

As you know, I usually offer a class on the new Painter every year, but not this year. However, I do want to share what I know about the new version…or at least how I learn a new version of painter. This entry as well as the next few will focus on what I do to learn a new version of Corel Painter. I am dividing the information into series. The first series concerns opening painter for the first time and creating new workspaces and layouts. The following two suggestions are highly recommended:

Before you open Painter for the first time, hold down the shift key and then open painter with the shift key activated. This is called a Shift Start and gives you an opportunity to set all workspaces back to the factory default settings. Then make sure you do not have anything open in the background before you run Painter’s brush performance accelerator.
Create a workspace and layout from scratch. Yes, you can still import a workspace from an older version, but the possibility of a glitch happening is very high. The versions are more and more complex. Taking an hour or two and creating a new workspace is a very good idea.
