Registration is Still Open for Painter 2018, Is It Real Paint

Hello Everyone,

You can still register for my class, Painter 2018, Is It Real Paint.  I cover all the new functions released with Painter 2018 and more.  The class includes 115 video demonstrations and many resources, such as brushes, papers, textures, etc.  I don’t think you will find another class that offers as much as this class.  Do register right away.  Everything is available for download to your computer; you can watch and work the assignments at your leisure.  The class will stay open well into the new year, however, registration will close December 31, 2017.  Don’t delay!

I hope to see you in class!  I created this image while demonstrating thick paint.  I had taken a photograph of Cade’s Cove in the Smokey Mountains on a winter day.  It was cold and a winter storm was brewing.  I wanted to express the feeling of the day, plus I was in a somewhat somber mood when I did the painting.  I love the new thick paint brushes and explain in detail how they work and show you how to build your own.  I think thick paint is one of the best new features of Painter 2018.

Happy Thanksgiving to those who follow this tradition.  And I want to wish everyone the Happiest Holiday Season and the Best New Year ever!

David Gell Brushes are Here!!!

Hello Everyone,

I know…I have been a very bad person and neglected my blog…sigh.  And at least a year ago I promised to post brushes created by David Gell, who I consider to be the best brush master ever.  Many of David’s brushes were on his site, JitterBrush, but he took the site down and his variants were not available on-line.  He did give me permission to post all of them for you.  Well…since today is my birthday, I thought I would pass David’s gift to my blog readers.  I know, about time, right?

I have followed David’s Painter tutorials since I started using Painter and most of what I know about brushes comes from his generous sharing.  I created a David Gell Brush library so that I could have all of his variants in one place.  This library contains 28 brush categories and some of them are quite old and haven’t been available for some time.  But, I have always loved David’s variants, old or new, so I have kept them over the years.  With many thanks to David; here is David Gell Brush Library.

David Gell Brush Library

To install these brushes, first download the above file and save it to your computer, then open Painter, go to the Menu Bar and select Brushes > Import > Brush Library and select the downloaded file.  Please note, the installed file is a separate library.  You will need to switch back and forth between libraries.

Some of David’s brushes are pretty complex and need a bit of explanation.  As time permits I will post tips.  Many folks have requested Suminagashi 2 category included in the library.  I thought I would give you a few tips copied from David’s JitterBrush site about those variants.

Suminagashi and Suminagashi Grad Variants

Suminagashi Grad B variant with rainbow pinched gradient

The color rendering Suminagashi and Suminagashi Grad variants can produce a very fluid, ethereal look, even without the aid of softening or distorting variants.  Variants with Grad in their name take their color information from the currently selected gradient, while other variants employ color variability via the Color Variability palette.  For this image, I have chosen Suminagashi Grad B variant with Rainbow Pinched gradient.

Z Prefixed Variants

Z Takayama distorting the first image

Variants in this library prefixed with a Z in their name do not apply any color of their own, but distort the underlying imagery in many ways.  Comparing to the traditional Suminagashi technique, this would be the closest equivalent to disturbing the surface of the floating ink media so that the different colors and regions begin to mix and flow into each other.

For these particular variants, David configured them so that stylus pressure controls the magnitude of the distortion effect.  I used Z Takayama variant to distort the first image in this post.

Floranagashi and Grainagashi Variants

Floranagashi left, Grainagashi bottom and right side. Image first filled with two point gradient.

The Floranagashi variant can produce a sumi-e style branch and foliage effect, while the Grainagashi variant interacts with the currently selected paper texture.  The Z Grainagashi Smear variant does not apply any color, but smears the underlying pixels determined by the current paper texture.

For this image, I filled the canvas with two point gradient.  I created the bottom and right side of the image with the Grainagashi variant using Madness paper texture.  The branch like strokes on the left used the Floranagashi variant.

The Suminagashi Dragons

Top stoke, Fuku Riu variant Bottom Stroke, Sui Riu

Use undo and redo to achieve the desired look with these variants.  With a little trial and error, they can produce dragon-like forms, even complete with heads.  In this example, I used the Fuku Riu (Good Luck Dragon) variant for the top stroke and the Sui Riu (Dragon King/Rain Dragon) variant for the bottom stroke.

Life Form and Life Form Mono

Life Form, top storke
Life Form Mono, bottom stroke

The strokes produced by the Life Form and Life Form Mono variants appear alien, hence the name.  The Color Variability Panel randomizes the colors/values within the strokes.  Use a slower stroke speed to produce a more closed, tubular form, and faster strokes to give a more open “backbone” effect.  In this example, I used Life Form for the top stroke and Life Form Mono for the bottom stoke.  I altered the velocity of the stroke to showcase the different look at different speeds.

In case you didn’t know, Suminagashi is an ancient Japanese paper marbling technique.  Google it and learn more, there’s even a few videos about it on You Tube.  Other groups of people used the same techniques.  I am especially fond of Ebru.  I think I have some videos somewhere, probably You Tube, about making Ebru like images in Painter.  Check it out.

OK, that’s it for this post.  I hope you enjoy David’s variants.  I know I have.  And once again, David…thank you so much for your generosity.

New Wacom Drivers Available and a Welcomed Change in the Way They Are Organized

Hello Everyone,

Wacom released drivers twice since I last posted.  Wacom has grouped the drivers so you do not have to look around for the current driver for your product.  Take a look at the image below.  Notice that under Latest and Previous Drivers, you have a drop down menu that lists all the compatible products for that set of drivers.  And look farther down and you see Drivers for Previous Generation Products.  The image doesn’t show the complete web page and if you cannot read it in your browser, click it to enlarge the image.  But, best of all go to Wacom Driver Homepage and look for yourself.

I think this is a wonderful change; it makes it so much easier to select the correct driver.  Thank you bunches Wacom!!!

Application Fixes

  • (Mac OS, Wacom tablet) Now Painter properly changes focus to the selected brush after you use keyboard shortcuts.
  • (Windows 7 and Windows 10) The icons in the Toolbox now display correctly on second launch of Painter. If you still experience this issue after applying the update, reset your workspace.
  • (Windows) All items in the following menus are less likely to be cutoff at common display settings: Window > Brush Control Panel, Tools menu (Window > Custom Palette > Add Command), Other menu (Window > Custom Palette > Add Command). Some related menu items are now grouped and appear in submenus.
  • (Windows) Painter file associations now work as expected when Painter 2017 coexists with a previous version on the same machine.
  • (Windows) The Help > Messaging Settings command lets you choose whether and how often to receive notifications about product updates and set other message preferences.
  • Applying gradients with the Interactive Gradient tool works as expected when switching channels.

  • Dual monitors: The Brush Selector appears as expected when moved to the upper-left corner of the secondary display.
  • It is now easy to add nodes to shapes.
  • Now when you hide all palette drawers in the Default workspace layout and exit the application, and then re-launch the application and display the palette drawer list (Window > Palette Drawers), Painter properly displays a list of all palette drawers that are available in the Default workspace layout.
  • Now when you reposition a palette, hide it, and do not display it over two consecutive launches of the application, the next time you launch Painter and show the palette, it opens in the expected location.
  • Painter no longer stops responding after you choose a Digital Watercolor brush, try to transform a texture, and then cancel the transformation and exit the application.
  • Painter no longer stops responding when you delete content from custom palettes by using the context menu.
  • Painter no longer stops responding when you manipulate nodes on captured gradients that have numerous nodes.

  • Painter no longer stops responding when you try to paint in the image window using a Wacom stylus pen without first creating or opening a document.
  • Texture Cover brushes now work as expected when you paint on a document, then create a new document, paint on it, close it, and then paint on the first document.
  • The cursor icon size no longer affects the accuracy of the sampled color when using the Dropper tool.
  • The Preserve Transparency layer setting is no longer ignored when you apply a fill (Edit > Fill) while the Interactive Gradient tool is selected.
  • The Scale Selection dialog box accepts new values by default so you can now complete the scaling operation by pressing Return (Mac OS) or Enter (Windows).
  • There’s no longer a flow map or paper shift with dab stencils when you paint on a layer versus when you paint on the canvas.
  • When you reinstall Corel Painter or install it on another computer, you can restore your purchases. This will help you download the brush packs that you have already purchased and reinstall them.
  • When you select a custom media library and relaunch Painter, Painter no longer reverts to the default library.

Check it out and enjoy Corel Painter 2017,

David Gell’s Jitterbrush Site

Hello Everyone,

David Gell, a Master Painter Brush Maker, long time supporter of Corel Painter, and mentor to many of us, closed Jitterbrush, his wonderful website.  It was full of wonderful information and incredible brushes.  Before closing David told me that I could download anything and put it on my blog to keep it available for Corel Painter users.  I must say, David, I can’t tell you how honored I am to help keep your incredible work with in easy reach of new and advanced Painter users.  You have helped so many of us for many years.

David planned to close his site on July 9, 2016 and I was going to start putting the information on my site at that time.  Unfortunately, my sister fell and developed a massive hematoma on the left side of her brain on July 8th and I had to go to Mississippi to help with her care.  I have been gone for 3 months and all the material from David’s site was still in Georgia.  I returned to Georgia last week, and I decided to start the project today.  I plan to add little by little until it is all here.

The same rules apply for any of the downloads available.

There are no restrictions on use, other than the resources are not to be offered for sale or shared without my prior consent.

OK…lets get started.  I will pretty much follow what David said about his resources with an occasional comment of my own…or I may paraphrase when necessary.  Let’s start with:

Download Variants as a Category or as a Library…your choice:

Tribal Beads & Weaves Category

If you choose to download the Category, download and save the Tribal Beads_Weaves.brushcategory “as is” to your computer.  Open Painter and go to Brushes > Import > Category and click open.  The category will load in the currently active Library.

If you choose to download the Library, download and save the Tribal Beads_Weaves.brushlibrary “as is” to your computer.  Open Painter and go to Brushes > Import > Brush Library and then click on the Tribal Beads_Weaves.brushlibrary file.  It will create a new library with Tribal Beads and Weaves loaded.

Enjoy your gift from David.

New Wacom Drivers released for PC and Mac

Hello Friends,

Wacom released new drivers for the PC and Mac.  Go to Wacom Drivers to get the latest download.  I always have mixed emotions about updating or not.  I tend to always update all of my software even if it doesn’t seem like it needs it.  Most of the time I am happy that I did, but lately, I have had some difficult updates with various software.  I still update, but at least I am a little more wary about doing so.

As usual, with Wacom Drivers, I disconnect my tablet, uninstall the current driver, reboot, install the current driver, reboot, and then reconnect the tablet.

Still Time to Register for My Class: Woo-hoo! What’s New in Corel Painter 2017

Hello Folks,

My class started at the Digital Art Academy, but it isn’t too late to register.  I am enjoying the class and I think the students are, too.  I produced over 30 videos already.  The first week we covered Painter 2017’s enhanced UI, property bars, and palette drawers.  Then we started painting and altering older paintings with the new Interactive Gradient tool.  And for the adventurous, I showed how to change the variants used by the Interactive Gradient Tool when it uses the Paint Express function.  It adds another bit of fun to an already powerful function.  In the attached video I demonstrate how Express Paint changed.

Following is the image created in the video.  I think this makes a great under-painting for a forest type landscape, but who knows…there is a lot of imagery lurking in this piece.  What do you see?

OK…that’s it from me.  Do join my class…I think you will enjoy it.  Register for Woo-hoo! What’s New in Corel Painter 2017.

Download Painter 2017

And of course, I have a class called Woo-hoo! What’s New in Painter 2017.  I designed the class to bring you up-to-date on all the new features of Painter 2017 plus lots more.  The following video is the first video of the class and gives a broad over-view of what’s new in this version.

If you have taken one of my classes previously, you know that I cover the material in great detail.  The class officially opens on Saturday, Aug 13th, but I made some of the Week 1 videos available so early registrants can start playing right away.

I made the following image in Corel Painter 2017 using the new interactive gradient tool.  I started with one of my inky landscapes and then added color via gradients.  I have demonstrated this technique in Painter 2016, but Painter 2017 brings way more power to the technique.  The gradient tool might be…I keep changing my mind…my favorite new feature.

I hope to see you in the class.  I promise it will be a lot of fun.
